I love tacos. I love fish. I love fish tacos. I love craft beer. I love fish tacos and craft beer. I ordered both at the counter. They will bring my order to me. I left a tip. The tacos are huge. And delicious. Everything is made fresh. I ordered my fried instead of grilled. I put hot sauce on my motherfucking tacos. The end.

I had heard a lot of good reviews of Spencer Makenzie's and had to try it. I selected one of their grilled fish tacos (a well known local chef had just posted on Facebook that their fish tacos were the best he has ever had!). Wow! the flour tortilla was excellent, much different than I have ever tasted. The size of the taco was great, and the fish was grilled just right - set in a bed of greens and topped off w/ their "Brooklyn" style sauce. I can't wait to go back and try their award winning burritos and some items on the me. In addition, the restaurant was squeaky clean and the service, both at the counter and food delivery was excellent. Highly recommend you give it a try the next time you are in San Luis Obispo.

This restaurant needs to open up everywhere because I'm in loveeee. Fish tacos are my type of tacos and at Spencer Makenzie's they know how to do it right. I initially thought for $5-$6 per taco, their tacos were overpriced but when you get them... holy moly they are HUGE. It's definitely worth it I think. The taco had a lot of flavor (especially the ahi taco), the toppings were fresh, and their sauces were delicious. I also tried their shrimp and fish burrito and for $9 you get a ginormous burrito equal to the size of a chipotle burrito if you asked the server to stuff it. As happy as I was with the size, I think they could do with less rice and more other stuff because I thought the fish and shrimp ratio was good but the rice was a little much. I also sampled some of the ceviche and poke and were disappointed with both. The ceviche was too dry and lacked the seafood portion of it since it was mostly vegetables. The poke was worse, it was pretty much a tomato and cucumber salad with some pieces of fish thrown in there. I wouldn't recommend getting that, just stick to the tacos, burritos, or salads (those looked good). I also really like their beer selection. I have a slight bias towards 21st amendment brewery since I work practically next door and have it quite often so it was cool to see them have it in SLO. The servers there were really friendly and the food came out pretty fast. The restaurant is HUGEEEEE, there is plenty of seating for large parties and there's even an outdoor patio area to eat in. Come here for their buy one get one free fish taco deal :) It's from Monday - Thursday from 3-5pm or any other time since it's pretty awesome!

Best fish tacos in slo. Fish from Spencer's in ventura so you know it's dank. 241 ties tacos are prime! Not very expensive and sculpin on tap.

The shrimp and fish burrito is amazing and their selection of sauces take it to the next level.

The staff were super friendly resourceful and helpful...unfortunately the grilled fish tasted dry in the taco and burrito real disappointed the sauces were great be cautious with the grilled fish it tasted frozen and not fresh......

If you like creamy, saucy, cabbage tacos, then come here. There wasn't much fish or calamari in my tacos in either of my tacos. The fish and calamari were cooked well, I just couldn't really taste it in the taco. Not worth the $5+ for creamy cabbage Maybe happy hour 2 for 1 would be okay if you take the meat, put it together to get one taco, and leave the rest. Maybe. Just maybe. But the chips were pretty good. They had texture and you can tell they're made of corn - in a good way.

I had the world famous fish taco with avocado, Brooklyn style. The taco was so big I had to hold it with two hands. I would definitely start with just one of these bad boys unless you are hungry enough to eat a horse. The fish was fried to golden brown perfection. The taco had all kinds of sauce in it, somehow someway reminding me of sushi when I ate it. Must be the fish, sauce, avocado combo. The interior has nice decor, and with a few surfboards on the wall, they meet California state law that says all restaurants that serve fish must have a surfboard on the wall.

Had the shrimp wontons ( warm and tasty ) , had the world famous tacos with the spicy sauce ( great) and had the fish/shrimp burrito! My stay at SAN LUIS OBISPO was great thanks to this food place it was tasty and the ingredients were fresh! Must try

Tried the World Famous Fish Tacos. They were excellent along with all the different sauces. I came in during the Two4One deal M-TH between 3-5pm. Best deal going in SLO. Will definitely be back to try the other items on the menu.

This place is seriously bomb. We ordered the ahi tuna salad, seafood burrito, fish n chips and clan chowder. Everything is really amazing!! Eat here you won't be disappointed.

First time here and it was delicious! I had the fish taco with avocado, Brooklyn style and it was really good! It's big enough to where one is plenty. Tortillas tasted like they were homemade? My boyfriend had the spicy shrimp and grilled veggies and it was just as yummy! A nice sized portion. Definitely worth trying out if you haven't yet!

Talk about finding a gem by accident! We were driving around the downtown area in SLO when we started to get hungry. We saw the sign for "fish taco" and thought that'd be a nice treat for lunch. Without even checking Yelp first (which we almost always do before we eat anywhere new), we ordered the fish tacos with tempura fish. Oh my goodness! The tacos were amazing and even more amazing when we tried the different sauces available at every table. I'll be back here the next time I'm in SLO.

Simply amazing. Healthy portions of fish and shrimp. Super tasty and everything so fresh. Will definitely be returning regularly!! Atmosphere is very tasteful and prices are very reasonable considering the size of potions served.

Just tried the fish taco at the SLO farmers market. Very well done, good flavor, good balance between the fish and cole slaw. Mine came with lemon need to always serve with limes. But was very good I'd come back and try the restaurant!

  • Kenna K.

Overpriced ($7 for one taco), small portions & undercooked shrimp. Good french fries though... Even the employee was eating chicken strips & fries on her break... That's a red flag to me when it comes to a taco joint...

On my last visit I opted for their much ballyhooed ("FiveThirtyEight Top 20 America's Best Burrito") grilled fish and shrimp burrito. It was good, but as anticipated also odd- rice and cabbage coexist uneasily within the tortilla. The fish was a bit dry, but the shrimp was plentiful and juicy. Still....why? Tacos serve fish better on every front. Portability, I suppose- you could eat one in the car without creating an EPA Superfund cleanup site. It was tasty enough, but...stick with the tacos. As burritos go I doubt it would crack my top 10 for SLO County.

Really great fish tacos. I loved the battered and fried one with the sweet chile sauce. I initially balked at the price, but the taco is large so it's worth it. I tried the grilled fish taco too but it's not as good. Last time I went, I ordered a fountain soda and literally NONE of the lids fit the cup. I had to have them pour my drink into a to-go soup bowl package, which had correctly fitting lids. The most annoying part about it was that I had to suggest that solution and up to that point, wasn't offered anything else in lieu of this issue (like a drink voucher of some kind). Sucks that the person in charge of supplies ordered the wrong size, but if I had known beforehand I wouldn't have bought a fountain drink. I no longer buy drinks there if I'm getting my food to go (which is almost always). I hope they can make it in that cursed corner location! :)

Holy crap this place is good. My son loved the tempura shrimp taco. I had the world famous fish taco, tempura and grilled, and both were amazing. During happy hour buy one get one free. They also have a killer sauce collection and beer selection.

All I can say is BOOM! 538 burrito is legit and will leave you satisfied and smiling.

  • Heidi B.

The famous fish taco was good with tempura fish. The ahi tuna sandwich wasn't amazing, though. Cheap bun, cheap lettuce, and covered in a thick layer of sauce. I couldn't even tell you how the tuna tasted past all the sauce, but it was a thin piece and only covering half on half the bun.

I was in SLO for two days and had a grilled fish and shrimp burrito twice. It is that good. You must get it Brooklyn style.

    (5)
  • Roger R.

Atmosphere nothing special.. the food is something else.. fish tacos (temporary/brooklyn style) are incredible... The table sauce range from sweet hot to habenero hot. All are tasty...

  • Matt G.

Pretty nasty fish tacos. And way way way overpriced. Like $6 a taco?! I know they are sizable but still. And it was far from "the best fish tacos" as they claim. It was watery and messy, and overstuffed. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this below-average joint

After three visits since their grand opening it is time for a review. First things first, this is a nice addition to SLO offering quality food, fair pricing in a cheerful downtown atmosphere. Good use of the covered patio area that opens up and gives you a vacation feel in the middle of downtown SLO. I like the fish tacos, grilled Brooklyn style. Brooklyn is the name of one of the owner's kids and you can tell the staff is needing to do some explaining on this popular sauce as they had added signage which helps. The tacos I have ordered have all been generous in portion size and well balanced between fish and veggies. One fish taco is plenty for me so I think the price is reasonable for the quality of ingredients and portion size. Ahi salad and the grilled fish and veggies are great choices for keeping things clean. Nice draft beer selection with craft and Mexican beers in draught. The manager is friendly and helpful. The food is getting worked out to match the Ventura location so I would say give it a few weeks, like most new restaurants, to get totally dialed in. I predict this place will be a hit.

  • Dallas M.

Staff was friendly and food came out promptly. We had 2 crispy fish tacos Brooklyn style, Ahi taco (my wife didn't get to finish because the busser asked if she wad done after stacking plate), calimari taco, grilled shrimp taco, and 2 beers - over $40. We are not opposed to paying for good food, but the value to quality is simply not there. Small meat portions were hidden under copius amounts of cabbage for nearly $6 a taco, insulting. Like the other reviewer, our friend also had plastic wrapper in her taco (we chalked up to opening struggles, but unacceptable in the long term). Saving grace was friendliness and pretty decent sauces for a fast casual place. We like to support local businesses, but aren't willing to be fed overpriced average faire in the name of "buy local." Work out the prices or portions and early opening issues (pay attention to what you're doing) and we'll be back. Also, the oldest family/friend fraudulent 5 star review from BEFORE the restaurant opened should be removed.

Honestly, its the best fish tacos I ever had. Price is 2 for 1 M-Th 3-5 pm. May include other fare. They deliver.

I had the famous fish taco and it's probably the best fish taco I've ever had. My fiancé had the ahi tuna taco, he said it was delicious. I would definitely eat here again. I might have to stop at the one in Ventura on my way to Phoenix.

Those who know me well know that I'm a taco connoisseur and I travel a lot seeking only the best Tacos one can find. Finally, SLO has a place to call a world class fish taco. I think Spencer's know it's damn good because it's the first thing on the menu. Get the chili sauce with it and avocado. For a buck extra you get 1/2 an avocado perfectly sliced. Not only is the taco super tasty with 4 custom branded sauces on each table to explore and dabble with but its the perfect amount of food. Sometimes after tacos you get tired because they're oily and you order too much, but at Spencer's, all you need is one. Plus, the iced tea tastes freshly brewed. Great place and highly recommend!

Went there with my dad yesterday. We each ordered a shrimp taco, mine without cabbage. Each was almost 6 dollars. Somehow she missed that we ordered two, (we had wine as well, so I didn't notice on the bill) so I only got my shrimp taco and it was a sorry sight. Five anemic cold shrimp on a tortilla that had some thick layer of seasoned cream cheese on it, with huge chunks of unevenly chopped bell pepper. We asked about my dad's, and it hadn't been ordered, so I went up and re-ordered it. For some reason his came out tempura battered, while mine was plain. That was odd, but he liked his ok. I was still hungry after my tiny taco, so I ordered the wontons for another 6 dollars. These weren't bad, but pricy for what you get. How hard is it to slap a bit of cream cheese and a jalapeno in a wonton wrapper and deep-fry. Definitely not brain surgery. All in all, food was mediocre, and portions were small, for the high price tag. I totally get that they are in a pricy location, but they need to work on portions, and figure out how to get the food out warm. Also, have someone professional chop those bell peppers. Huge chunks of raw bell pepper is unappetizing to look at, and completely overwhelms every other flavor on this dish. Oh, and read the label on the sauces they keep on the table - refrigerate after opening. But they are sitting out on the tables all day.....

This place is great. I heard the rave about it and decided to try it out. I had the Fish and Vegetables plate and it was pretty good, I'm sure there are better options on the menu. The fish (cod) serving was large, and the vegetable serving as well. I absolutely love the array of hot sauces they have! Definitely challenged my spice tolerance! My platter was overpriced at $12.50 but as I said, there are better options on the menu such as their famous burrito and/or tacos. My friend had some of the tempura vegetables and in my opinion they were wayyyyyy to heavily battered. I couldn't even identify they vegetable under all the fried stuff most of the time. Other than that, the atmosphere is fantastic, I love the location, and the service was nothing but superb. Will probably come here again next time I'm in SLO.

YO! The Five Thirty Eight fish and shrimp burrito would have Nobu AND Hiro Nakamura asking how rice can get soo sticky?!! If you don't know who those two Japanese legends are then you should probably just head down to Frog and Peach and skip dinner/lunch all together... Rumor has it that Shinzo Abe has requested SMFISHCO's Ahi pocket as his meal of choice before the next NATO Summit but Shreddy Wasnowski doesn't like to fly commercial so delivery might be an issue. The cabbage on the tacos is crunchier than the transient's underwear who resides in front of The Gap and the tortillas are fluffier than the local marine layer. The three sauces here would have made anything on Fat Cat's menu appetizing and thats saying a lot...that was a heinous menu...let's be honest. The decor inside reminds me of Kelly Slater's man cave. Gnar gnar brah. SMFISHCO yo!!!!! Higuera's new thriller

Okay the family and I are back in California visiting. We went to Pismo Beach to eat but it was a no go due to a car show, so we used Yelp to find some place to eat in San Luis Obispo. This place showed up and all I have to say is thank you car show. I had there award winning Grilled fish $ shrimp Burrito Brooklyn Style it was out of this world. I strongly urge anyone that is in the area next come try it.

Updated review. The location has found its groove getting proportion ratios the same as my favorite original location in Ventura. Family favorite items are fish and shrimp burrito, ahi pocket, grilled fish taco, fish and chips, and 'ahicado'. We have brought a lot of friends and family to here, all have loved it. Our local friends and family now are regulars on their own. Location is always very clean, and staff friendly.

I've been using yelp to find good food for a while now. I felt obligated to write my first review after eating here. I got the fish and shrimp burrito after seeing many reviews mention it specifically. It was the most disgusting piece of food I've ever had the misfortune of spending my hard earned money on. The menu claims it contains "generous portions" of fish and shrimp. I counted a whopping 2 shrimp, and for me to say there was an equal amount of whatever bland excuse for fish they used would be an extreme overstatement. A more accurate description would be "generous portions of lettuce and rice with a hint of what you actually are paying for." I am not an extremely picky eater. I can eat most things and lots of it, but this burrito sat less than half finished on my plate before I gave up trying to get my money's worth out of it and left. The rest of my party ordered shrimp and vegetables which came with complimentary flying insects, and a seared ahi burger which would have been cooked more thoroughly had it been left on the sidewalk for 30 seconds. Now we all get to go to bed hungry, with lighter wallets, and concerns about our health come morning. I'm not sure who they paid off for all the good reviews, but don't fall victim yourself. Avoid this place at all costs.

For our first time visit we had high expectations since the reviews we read were pretty good. Our order: -Tempura Vegetables: the batter was salty and not like any other tempura we've ever had. They also add Parmesan cheese on top. -Fish Tacos with fried fish: you get 1 medium sized taco. Our order had a ton of cabbage on top which overshadowed everything else. There seemed to be something missing as it tasted so bland and after we left I figured out that it should have had a mango salsa on top (according to he menu) as for the fish, well I couldn't even taste it with all the cabbage. It definitely could have used some kind of dressing. -Chicken strips: just like any other frozen chicken strips. -Burrito filled with fish, shrimp and white rice. Again there was something missing between all the rice that was in it...could it be the fish and shrimp? Hmmm? Nothing special here so I guess our hunt for good seafood continues. I give a 3 for having a private parking and not having to mess with meters!

I came across this place after reading good reviews on yelp (but of course). Not quite a hole in the wall, but it's not a franchise, it's unique to San Luis Obispo. We decided to go here after seeing the line at Splash Cafe. Plus, we wanted something different. It's main motif are the tacos, especially the fish tacos. I will admit that I didn't have them, because being from Los Angeles, I've had my share of great fish tacos right within my city. They have classic favorites like fish and chips, clam chowder, calamari, and the like. I got the fish and chips, and the portion was plenty. Lots of fries and 3 big pieces of fried fish. It was very fresh and their tartar sauce was amazing! On the tables, they have an array of hot sauces that they make themselves. My favorite was the spicy tropical one. There are also a couple of mild ones thrown in too, for those with a milder liking. Fries were seasoned very well and their coleslaw tasty and not saturated with mayo like most places. Another thing I love about it is that it's a sit down restaurant with no waiter. You walk up the counter, order your food and they bring it to you, which I think is great, because sometimes you want the quickness of fast food, but the quality of a great restaurant. Will be back again...

I have to echo Luke W's sentiments about Spencer's. After seeing the rave reviews and lavish praise on Yelp (and seeing "world famous best taco" and "America's best burrito" splashed on their menu), I thought I was going to be in for some game-changing fish tacos and burritos. The Fish & Shrimp Burrito looked tasty but when I bite into it all I tasted was white flavorless rice and lettuce. The fish was bland and I could barely find any shrimp. I tried putting all the house sauces (4 variations offered on every table) on it to awaken the flavors but I still couldn't find the flavor I was looking for. The fish taco fared much better for me. It's garnished with colorful cabbage, mango salsa, cilantro, lime and cheese. You can get it grilled or fried or anointed with Brooklyn sauce (a sweet and spicy house sauce). The Brooklyn sauce helped ramp up the flavors and the lime imparts a bright refreshing acidity. I would definitely go Brooklyn style if you like a little creamy kick. The surf theme is nice with surfboard-lined walls and pictures of colorful surf scenes. It's clean and spacious and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with large flat screens and some bar seating. They serve beer and wine too. Spencer's would be a good option for Happy Hour 2-for-1 tacos Monday through Thursday, 3-5 p.m. If I'm craving some fish tacos while in town, I might be back to Spencer's. SLO is home to many of my favorite seafood joints, so it might be hard for me to find my way back in the near future.

Num Num fish tacos and burritos! I've wanted to try this place for a while and finally did. We didn't see the Two for One taco deal that are Monday - Thursday between 3-5, but will definitely be back to have that. The service was very friendly and fast, no complaints there (though it did seem that there was more cashiers in the front than registers, a few of them just stood around). When ordering, the cashiers would ask if you want Brooklyn sauce with that but I'd like it if there was an explanation somewhere on the sign that was stuck on the cash register. We ordered a Ahi Taco and a Fish and Shrimp Burrito. I forgot to ask what kind of fish was in the burrito but it was pretty good. The place itself looks pretty welcoming, good for bigger groups and such. The open kitchen is nice since you can have a bar seat and watch the meals be made. I'm not surprised by the flies...since it was a big open door entrance, but they could probably do something that'll prevent the flies from coming in. It's not that appetizing to have to eat with flies buzzing near by. My only other complaint about the cleanliness is that the tables are really sticky. It feels like they just wiped things off with a cloth when cleaning the tables. Food came fairly and was delivered to our table. The burrito looked a little lonely by itself in the basket but boy was it delicious. I was a bit surprised that the rice in it was plain white rice (no flavored rice? or even a simple cilantro rice?). At least the excessive amount of sauce made up for the plain rice in flavor. The sauce did overpower everything else and leaked to the bottom (sad soggy bottom). It kind of made me want to dissect this burrito and eat it with a fork and knife. As for the taco that had the Brooklyn sauce, it shows in the menu picture that the Ahi to have a just a sear on the outside of the fish but it was completely cooked for ours. The taco was delicious but the spiciness did linger with us a bit after the meal. I'd probably just ask for less sauce next time. Final Thoughts: Will definitely be back here to have the Two for One taco deal. The prices are fairly reasonable too. Everything tastes pretty fresh so I'm happy for that :]

Totally agree with Luke's comments below (6/25/15).....shrimp burrito was bland, couldn't even find any shrimp, way too much flavoredless rice (and we LOVE rice). Some kind of flavor was definitely needed. I tried each of the bottles on the table but couldn't seem to fix it. The fish tacos were large and pretty good ("world famous" hmmmmm?) ; I kept biting into something chewy (dried out fish?) I know this restaurant is fairly new, so I might try it again on another visit to SLO, maybe try something different on the menu. (Note: Something unusual happened while we were eating........a fairly large wall art suddently fell off the wall and onto a table. Luckily, people were seated at surrounding tables but not there. No earthquake or ruckus or anything causing it, it just suddenly came downl......weird.)

It's tough to give a place a low rating, but I had been wanting to come here for some time, and finally made it in the other day. After looking through the menu, the obvious item that jumps out at you is the FIveThirtyEight Top 20 Burrito. How could you NOT try this!? Well, I have never heard of FiveThirtyEight and now I see why.... Don't get me wrong, I love burritos with rice and all kinds of fillings, but this was a big disappointment. The burrito was bland, the rice to protein ratio, and the accompanying sauce was just way off. Far far too much rice, and the fish inside was bland and dry. The 'spicy' sauce inside was not spicy and it just lacked any kind of character or reminder of taste. The 5 accompanying sauce bottles were a nice touch but I see that they have so many to choose from because obviously you'd need to add something...anything, really, to get some flavor injected into this burrito. So sad. As I wanted to be over the moon about it. We had to ask 2-3 times for cocktail sauce, tarter sauce, spicy sauce, and other items that I was surprised were not more readily available. The cashier was friendly! I still think this place might be secretly good (except for the burrito) as I tried some of their ahi at Firestone Walker Beerfest, and it was fantastic, but this review is not for that... Needless to say, I will come back and try something different, and update my review. But as it stands on the burrito and my first experience....it's a pass.

I've had Spencer Makenzie's in Ventura before multiple times on the way down to LA and I've always been a fan! Naturally, I was pretty excited to see them open one in SLO. We went around noon and the place was pretty busy. There's a nice patio area with both standard tables and bar seating. There's also an indoor area with booths and tables. The kitchen is open so you can watch them cook up your tasty fish tacos. What we ordered: +fish and chips - these are probably not ordered that often so they weren't as fresh and piping hot as we would have liked. +ahi tuna pocket - inari sushi with tuna topping. Unfortunately, this wasn't very good. The tuna was a bit dry so they might have pre-made the pockets in batches and threw them in the fridge for smoother service. The dish could have used more dynamite sauce drizzled over the top rather than just a dab in the middle. +fish and shrimp burrito w/avocado (brooklyn style! - do it!!) - this burrito was super flavorful and I loved the combination of fish with shrimp. Sadly, halfway through the burrito I bit into a plastic wrapper of some sort. I didn't want to make a big fuss so I just took it out and kept going. I think if I were to base it off of today's experience, I would give them 3 stars. But since they JUST opened, I'll cut them some slack. Service was great and everyone was very friendly/accommodating. Hopefully next time I'll have a more enjoyable experience :)

Let me start off by saying that growing up in California allows for some serious experience with thousands, yes thousands, of fish taco variations. From Tijuana street style to tempura teriyaki and everything in between you're never more than 10 minutes away from some restaurant that is slaying that fish taco goodness. Upon my discovery of a new fish taco spot here in SLO my interest was pure, natural and unadulterated. As young child who discovers a new toy in the TV commercial between cartoons and has to have it. So naturally I waited a few months before indulging in my fantasy to ensure the business had sufficient time to get nestled into their new spot and fine tune the execution of such a highly prized food celebrity that is the Ca fish taco. We went stopped on week day early evening and appreciated the clean and contemporary design and execution of the interior of the restaurant. The front counter girl was pleasant and incredibly patient answering all of my 20 questions about the restaurant, the food, and happy to give personal recommendations. The famous fish taco is basically non-negotiable when they advertise it as top rated and world renowned. Don't quote me there but it was in that realm of claims. Needless to say they were DAMN good and quite customizable which is a big plus. Especially for those more particular people. Multiple house made sauces all at your fingertips at each table only adds to the experience and allows for an additional level of flavor and enjoyment to anything you order. I am almost done, promise! All in all this is a SOLID addition to our ever growing food scene here in SLO and we will definitely be going back for more. Not so much as a criticism but a personal choice is that they ease up a bit on the white sauce, maybe they called it the spencer sauce, can't remember. It was great but that's only my personal taste preference. Check it out if you're looking for some damn good and actually quite creative seafood options in a casual modern setting in downtown. Oh yeah they also have been and wine to wash it all down!

This is a great addition to the food options in SLO! I'm especially excited to have a place that specializes in fish dishes, is easy to take the kids to, and has beer on tap. Food: The food is spot-on and exactly what you should expect from a fish place. We had the original fish tacos - one tempura style and one grilled. Both were delicious and really big! I really liked the Brooklyn Style taco. Also, the flour tortillas were notably fresh. One taco is easily enough food, unless you are really hungry. Since it was our first time there, we also tried a small cup of the clam chowder and the blackened salmon salad. Both were delicious. Honestly, one of the best cups of clam chowder I've had and it definitely beats out some of the other local spots that specialize in clam chowder. Ambiance: Again, so happy we can bring the kids with us. They have TVs with various sports playing and it's a very casual atmosphere. We sat on the outside covered patio. There were plenty of space heaters, so it was nice to eat dinner outside without getting cold. Service: Everyone was very friendly and helpful. They gave us recommendations on what to try since the menu is pretty big. Our food arrived quickly. No complaints. We will be back.

Highly recommend the fish and shrimp burrito. Fantastic!

The chili sauce gets one star. The rest was whack. The ceviche was basically a tub of chunky salsa with a few fully cooked pieces of shrimp and fish. All the food was reliant on the sauces for flavor. There are much better mexican restaurants and much better seafood restaurants. Go there.

Grilled fish tacos are amazing!! The ahicado is also really good. Highly recommended Spencer' for a quick lunch. They're pretty fast.

They boast world famous fish tacos and they do NOT disappoint. The clam chowder is delicious and creamy with the perfect amount of clam. The fish tacos are huge and almost too pretty to eat. When we came in the manager (I'm assuming) took our order and was friendly as can be. After we got all of our food, he came over and gave recommendations on the hot sauces (which were also amazing). All in all, as a tourist in downtown San Luis Obispo, this is a must for fish tacos!

My favorite is the Grilled Fish and shrimp burrito, Brooklyn style. This beast is almost a foot long, and delicious to the last bite. It's always hard to choose from the amazing sauces they have. The staff is always friendly, the restaurant clean and spacious, and sports games on the TVs. Great selection of beers, too. I'm happy that we have this place in SLO. Check it out!

I don't know how I missed the opening day of this place! I have always wanted to stop by the Ventura location on my way back from work functions in LA to SLO but never had the time. So excited that a quality seafood restaurant has opened to provide us another venue for quick tasty fare in this little city. The place is open and breezy, welcoming and casual; the only things missing are seagulls and an ocean view. Service was prompt and friendly but the line amassed fast for the lunch rush. My to go order came out quickly and the gentleman who gave it to me offered a chance to try all five of their signature sauces. That was super sweet especially considering that most places upcharge you after just one or two sauce add ons. I could barely wait to get my food home because the aroma it created in my car nearly overwhelmed my olfactory nerves. I think I ran through two red lights just to get home and open my bag. I am happy to say that I wasn't mislead by my nose. The food was delicious! The shrimp and fish burrito served "Brooklyn" style was my favorite. It is a huge wrap full of rice, cilantro, onions, peppers, flaky fresh tasting fish and shrimp. Brooklyn style is the mixture of spicy pepper sauce added to give it a bit of a kick and it was awesome! I loved the aioli/Mayo sauce with it as well. I'm scared to ask its caloric content however. I also ordered some very flavorful shrimp wantons which were tasty too. I loved the sweet duck sauce and green onions on top. The only reason they are not getting five stars is because their clam chowder is only average and had hardly any clams throughout my serving. I would have also enjoyed more shrimp in the burrito ( I think I had 3 total) but it was still worth every penny and quite reasonable at $9. I am sure I will be back next week!

Try the fish and shrimp burrito. The salsas are very nice...a bit too "Americanized" for me but good addition. Try this place out if you're in the mood for a good so-cal style burrito.

I tried the calamari taco and it was so crazy full of flavor! The batter was flavorful and crispy, not gummy like a lot of places in town. The quality of the meat was great. The taco was a large portion with lots of fresh produce and the sauces are the best! Yay for great tasting, spicy sauces!! I will definitely be eating here again!

Love this place!! Everything we have tried is delicious! My favorite is the Brooklyn Style Seared Ahi Taco.

I stopped by again on my lunch and noticed they had beer specials plus lowered the price of fountain sodas. I work across the street so this makes things much more reasonable. Michael and staff are always extremely friendly!

If you haven't been here yet you need to try the wontons and tempura fish taco! So good just a little overpriced but the flavor and size makes it worth trying it.

I tried a grilled fish taco with avocado Brooklyn style while at the Farmer's Market and it was delicious! When I took my son to the restaurant the fish tacos were good, but had too much cabbage on them. It is also pricey so go for the 2 or 1 taco special if you are a big eater.

Excellent! Brooklyn style is crazy good. Just do it. Grilled fish taco and shrimp were delish.

The Ahi pocket had fish that was hard/unnaturally green and the Ahi fish taco was pretty good until I found a long piece of hair in it. The flavors were there but I won't be coming back after that first time experience.

We finally have a place to get good fish tacos in SLO!!!! Tempura fish or shrimp taco is delicious. The clam chowder is also great. Nice downtown location and great for kids.

This place is AMAZEBALLS! The fish tacos are fresh, filling, and delicious...they remind me of a beautiful butterfly wrapped in a double rainbow riding on the majestic back of an albino unicorn. They are the best thing I've tasted since a PK circa 2006. Ooowwwhheee this is yummy in my tummy

Fish taco was really good - 8 out of 10 Poke was bad. Didn't even taste like poke. Must never have been to Hawaii - 3 out of 10. Ceviche was pretty good. Needs more citrus. 7 out of 10. Nice vibe. I'll give it another try.

Came here today for lunch with my mother and brother for the first time today. The World Famous Fish Taco was absolutely amazing especially with the "Brooklyn sauce". My family and I were also very impressed with the "feel" and environment of the restaurant. Staff was friendly, prompt on the food (yet it didn't feel like "fast food") and the overall experience was great. We left satisfied and talking about coming back again soon.

Went to Spencer Makenzie's Sunday, took my niece to lunch. We shared some yummy chips and salsa. She had the Aji Taco and I had the Parker Burger- Brooklyn style. My niece- a SM regular, loved her taco. Super fresh aji, crispy tortilla and some ice tea. What's not to love?? My Parker burger with seared aji was the bomb! I am def. ordering it again. I slathered on the Sweet Chili Fire sauce.. ya, it's messy. Extra napkins, please! Washed it down with a cold Negro Modelo... Good stuff!

After finishing my wonderful Tri-Tip sandwich at Firestone Grill, I took a stroll down to Spencer's and tried the grilled fish taco. Simply phenomenal. Went down a treat, this place is worth a try for anyone who craves a healthy seafood fix.

Not that good. $5.50 for a ground beef taco! $5.75 for a modelo! Too much sauce (Brooklyn style), small portions, buried in cheap cabbage. I had high hopes for this place but I was not impressed. The atmosphere inside is nice though, and they make three hot sauces on the tables that are pretty tasty. But overall, not worth the money at all.

Finally got around to checking Spencer Makenzie's out. Was pleasantly surprised with the quality of service and food here. Sara, my cashier, was very friendly and bubbly. I grabbed 2 of their grilled fish tacos because of their buy one get one happy hour deal. On top of that it was $2 off on all beers. Real hard to beat such a deal. Overall great food, friendly people, and cheap beer!

Never been before today. The ahi taco with avocado I had was one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. The layout and ambiance aren't special but I'll be back as often as possible

What a great place to grab a bite. Great food, service and ambiance. They really know how to brew up a good plate of food. Ride high!

A little fishy, both in the figurative and literal sense. We had a fish and shrimp burrito and the world famous taco. I was a little hungry when we started so when the girl asked about chips and salsa I said sure. $2.95, which I guess is fine except our food came with chips and salsa which wasn't mentioned at ordering the 'with beer snack'. (Beer BTW, starts at $5.25). When we try a new place for the first time I like to go with what is recommended by the cashier; that said I'm not sure what "Brooklyn Style" is, what connection it has to the west coast, or why it was an up charge. Overall very average at best but in par with all the other weak taco/burrito places locals have come to expect in SLO. The girls behind the counter were friendly but more distracted yaking with the guys behind the counter to make sure the tables weren't slimy from salsa or if we had everything we needed. Sadly, restaurants are doomed at this location.

Fish tacos were good. Chips were pretty terrible. The sauces were interesting and allow you to mix up the flavors, but tasted just okay in my opinion.

Delicious! We had the Parker burger which is an ahi sandwich. Soooo good and loved the bread. Also, we loved the Grilled Vegetable Burrito with avocado and Brooklyn style. Brooklyn style is with the white Spenser sauce and the sweet chili fire sauce. I highly recommend it that way. They have a bunch of different sauces that are fun to try(I'm a sauce person!). The atmosphere is awesome. I really like the outside patio area with the TV. Perfect on a pretty day, which is almost everyday here. Overall, this place is amazing! Come check it out!!!

I have had the Grilled Fish Burrito Brooklyn Style and thought it was delicious. I have also had the grilled fish and vegetable and the fish tacos and would highly recommend them to anyone. Happy hour Draft beer and a great selection of IPA and Mexican beers make for a great afternoon. I will be a regular here. Enjoy.

Being a calorie counter I appreciated that they had a couple to simple healthy meals. I got the fish and veggie plate and it was just that grilled white fish and veggies which is what I wanted.

We 're visiting from out of state and we were recommended this place (not many places are open after 9 in SLO). We shared the grilled shrimp and the ahi tuna taco both with avocado. Both were really good and pretty big! Too bad we are leaving tomorrow morning because I would have loved to try the Ahicado.

Bomb food and service. Try it Brooklyn style and try out all of the sauces on the tables. And their happy hour 50 cent wontons are unbelievable.

I have been a fan of Spencer Makenzie's from Ventura. We were driving to another popular restaurant in the area until we saw Spencer Makenzie's fish company. We stopped and forgot all about going to the other place. I got a shrimp taco, ahi taco and a (Bloody Cure) bloody beer. Loved it all. They never disappoint.

This place has great fish tacos. Try all of the sauces! It also has options for kids and vegetarians (veggie burrito). A welcome addition to SLO. Their place in Ventura is worth a stop too.

Great fish and shrimp tacos. Nice to see a great restaurant move into this space in downtown San Luis Obispo! Try the Poki as it was awesome!

Ordered the fried fish and chips and was rather disappointed. They were greasy and the batter was bready, more like something that should go on a corn dog maybe? The actual fish inside was good but again the corn dog batter threw me off.

Awesome first meal here. Service was great and atmosphere was perfect but it was the food that made me write the review. The shrimp burrito and fish tacos were amazing. The sauces were great. I was here for work and I'll be back soon with my family.

People kept asking if I'd tried Spencer Mackenzie's yet, so wanted to check it out. Busy place, like the indoor/outdoor seating. We had the Ahi taco, shrimp burrito, ahi pocket, & beer before heading to Farmers. Good location & food, we'll definitely be back!
